Does Privacy Limit what you can do in this Digital World?

File Access & File Sharing

Why would you hand over your files to somebody you've never even met?

I can see the issue here. Big tech spends a fortune making the landscape look small and your choices few. And “Hey everybody is doing it, it must be fine, apparently”. But, just think about the work that went into creating those files, whose or what information is contained in them?

If you’re running a business it is an open window into the soul of your business. Your thoughts, plans, contacts, financial situation. Have you actually fully read the privacy rules of the services you are using? Take a look. Then ask yourself again “Why would I hand over my files to somebody I’ve never even met?”.

Who has the most to lose?

I’ve been in the IT business a very long time and idea of clouds wasn’t to create massive monster data warehouses with as many companies data stored in them as possible. It was simply a concept to allow people and businesses to break down the office walls and get out and work in the real world. Where their customers are or wherever they need to be. No privacy issues, lack of control or independency issues. Just your business on legs. Allowing you to work how, when and wherever you like.

Is it even possible to share files easily without using third party services?

Oh yes, There’s a whole lot more than file sharing possible without using a third party which, I’ll cover in future posts on private communication, private document creation & editing and private time management and scheduling.

But, for now lets get back to file access and file sharing.

Private File access

I have multiple Private-Clouds, business clouds that have shared areas across departments (Inter Cloud sharing) and my own Private-Cloud. All of which allow me to access my files on any connected device from anywhere in the world at any time. Without any data leaving my network via third party servers.

That’s the privacy, flexibility and control that cloud was meant to be.

Click the images below for a more detailed view.

Client Apps allow File access from your mobile phone. With Apps available for iOS and Android.

A desktop clients allows you to keep a synchronised copy of your clouds contents for backing up or working offline (When the broadband goes down). The synchronisation works both ways.

Using the web interface allows you easy access and viewing of your files without having to download sensitive files to your laptop. Of course you can download from here if you wish.

Your own Private-Cloud wouldn’t really feel yours until it’s sporting your favourite colour scheme…

Private File Sharing

When it comes to file sharing we have a good selection of options available too.

Say you have a friend or client that you want to share a file privately with but you don’t want to grant them access to your Private-Cloud. Send them a link in a messenger App or email just like this:

 Or this:

If you want people to be able to share files with you without  needing access to your Private-Cloud you can send them a link to an upload share. Like this:

If you have a group of friends or a team that you want to be able to share and work on files with. You’re not in the world of paying per user anymore, so create them an account, create your groups/projects and share away. Ad-Free and Privately. From anywhere.

So, does privacy limit what you can do in this digital world? So far that’s a great big no.

In my next post, I’ll be covering communication. Video and messaging without a third-party provider. Communicating privately (That’s actually totally private).
